Cruising website CruiseCritic.com announced its Cruisers' Choice Awards Wednesday. The Disney Fantasy didn't just win in the coveted "best overall ship" and "best dining" categories. The ship took 6 of 10 awards in the large ship category, also winning for best cabins, best entertainment, best public rooms and best service. Parents and other adults can enjoy grown-up dinners aboard the Disney Fantasy, which may be why the entertainment giant's cruise ship won the "best dining" award in the large ship category. Carnival Cruise Line's Liberty ship, which took top honors in the value category, features Guy Fieri burgers and tacos and burritos made fresh while you wait on the Lido deck. Disney Wonder took top honors in the mid-size "best overall ship" category, as well as "best entertainment" and "best service." Oceania's Riviera ship took 3 of the top 10 honors in the mid-size category, including best dining, best cabins and best public rooms. Dine at Jacques, a restaurant by Jacques Pépin, and take cooking classes in the Bon Appétit Culinary Center. The Norwegian Sun offers up a spa, casino, dance clubs, youth programs and enough food and drink to feed a king: 16 dining options and 11 bars and lounges. Seabourn Quest won for best overall ship, best public rooms and best value for money, the most of any ship in the small ship category. Choose to dine in the Crystal Serenity's main dining room in the traditional way, with the same waiters and fellow dinner guests, at 6:15 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. Or you can break the mold and book your own reservation. Who's surprised that Disney Fantasy won the "Best for families" award, a category not broken down by ship size? Not Mickey or Minnie!
- Two Disney ships took multiple honors
- Fine dining is increasingly important at sea
- One ship won the best overall and the best value for money awards
(CNN) -- Never mind those pesky norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships earlier this year. And who wants to hear more unappetizing details from the first Carnival Triumph "poop cruise" trial?
Millions of cruisers set sail every year for fun, sun and relaxation, and we assume that most of them return home happy and rested. Disney's cruise ships seem to make many of those cruisers especially happy, as seen from their big wins at the 2014 Cruise Critic Cruisers' Choice Awards, the Cruise Critic website announced Wednesday.
Disney's Fantasy ship took 6 of 10 awards in the large ship category, while Disney's Wonder took 3 of 10 awards in the mid-size ship category.
"The Cruisers' Choice Awards are a fantastic honor for cruise lines to receive as they're based on personal experiences shared by cruisers themselves," said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic. "This list of winners truly reflects excellence in the industry, and serves as a seal of approval from consumers who have sailed on these ships over the past year."
The awards are bestowed in three different ship categories, based on passenger capacity. Large ships carry 2,000 or more passengers. Mid-size ships carry 1,200 to 1,999 passengers. Small ships carry less than 1200. Awards are calculated using Cruise Critic member ratings.
