recently, there have been 2 cities in Texas that have passed an ordinance requiring retail outlets to charge for (single use) plastic bags, one of those cities is mine - Dallas
however, the store I work in is not located in the city of Dallas, so we don't charge for bags, which has caused a huge jump in our customer base
some stores, like Walmart, are implementing the ordinance in all of it's stores and they're not asking you if you'd like a bag, they're just assuming you'll use them and charging you accordingly
also, they're not allowing you to bring in your own bags, and some customers are not so sure it's a good idea *anyway*
one customer I was talking to was a young black man and he recognized the problem with walking around Walmart with a bag on his arm
from the conversations I've had, it's clear that most customers are not happy with this ordinance and some are almost paranoid that we're going to charge them for any bag they use
as a resident and an employee, I hate the things, loathe them even
every day is a battle to keep them off the floor, the registers, stashed under counters, stuffed into other bags and boxes, it's a never ending battle
as I drive to work, I can see them on fence lines, in creek beds, in every parking lot of every shopping center anywhere
I would love to see them disappear for good from the retail market places
I'm curious as to how this issue is handled in other places and how others perceive the issue and possible solutions?
